THE FEDERATION OF ACCIDENT INSURANCE INSTITUTIONS

The Federation of Accident Insurance Institutions (FAII) functions as the co-ordinating organ of all the organisations which are engaged in statutory accident insurance. Every insurance company handling the statutory accident insurance in Finland has to be a member of the FAII. In addition to the 12 insurance companies engaged in statutory accident insurance, also the Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution and the State Treasury are members of the FAII.

The organs of the FAII comprise the General Assembly and Board. On the Federation’s Board not only the insurance companies are represented but also the most important labour market organisations.

Under the Federation there also operates the Employment Accidents Compensation Board for the purpose of promoting uniform practice concerning claims. Regulations of the Employment Accidents Compensation Board are issued by decree. Questions of reimbursement defined by legislation are referred to the Employment Accidents Compensation Board in every case .

The main responsibilities of the FAII are

• the collection and maintenance of statistics on work accidents and occupational diseases
• tasks connected with strengthening the principles governing insurance premiums,
• the issuance of guidance for handling claims,
• the development of legislation,
• supervision,
• certain compensations,
• agreements for arranging medical care with nursing institutions,
• the maintenance of a system of medicines obtainable without charge,
• issues involving the implementation of international social security affairs and
• the processing, collection and remittance agreements of unemployment insurance premiums together with the central funds of the unemployment fund system.
